Although it wasn’t without a hitch, Sunday’s Iron Man auction at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) will be remembered for its spectacular display and high-paced bidding.
With a large crowd in attendance and an even bigger online audience, it may have acted as a ‘next step’ for the booming prop collection industry.
Case in point? The $19,000 shelled out for lot #29, the Iron Monger Hero Helmet and Torso, by an anonymous movie memorabilia collector.
“It’s a great movie and a unique piece,” he said. “I think it will be a good investment.”
In addition to the Iron Monger Hero Helmet and Torso, several other high-ticket items stole the show.
Lot #2, the Iron Man Crushed Mark III Helmet, sold for $13,000.
Lot #18, the Hero Mark I Mask from Desert, sold for $9,000.
Lot #33, the Iron Man Hero Mark I RT Unit, sold for $10,800.
- Lot #34, the Iron Man Hero Mark II RT Unit, sold for $10,200.
Other than the Iron Man hardcover auction book, the cheapest items to go at auction were lot numbers 71, 96, 102 and 118; the Hero RT Unit Surgery Suction Tube, Rhodes’ Lt. Colonel Rank Pin, Rhodes’ “Mission Control Center” Photo ID and Hero Motorcycle License Plate respectively. Each item sold for $50.
By all accounts, it was a very pleasurable experience…and one many hope will be duplicated in the near future.
Other note-worthy sales:
Lot #5, the Iron Man Hero Mark III Left Hand, sold for $6,600.
Lot #7 the Iron Man Mark III Hero Right Hand Armor, sold for $1,560.
Lot #9, the Iron Man Mark III Left Leg, sold for $2,700.
Lot #10, the Iron Man Mark III Right Leg, sold for $3,000.
Lot #17, the Hero Forged Mark I Mask, sold for $4,500.
Lot #43, the Hero Stark Industries Wet Bar from Desert, sold for $3,240.
Lot #60, the Hero Schematic Drawings of Mark I from Cave, sold for $6,600.
Lot #64, the Hero Unassembled RT Unit Ring Set, sold for $2,400.
Lot #88, the Obadiah Stane’s Hero Sonic Taser with Earplugs, sold for $3,300.
Lot #90, Pepper Pott’s Hero Downloading Device, sold for $1,680.
Lot #108, Tony Stark’s Hero MIT Class Ring, sold for $1,440.
And just to give you an idea of how rabid some collectors are to add a piece of movie history, Lot #79, Ray’s Pizza Box from Obadiah, sold for $300!
